FLOWER POWER – part one

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on 3 films for 3 different studio classes, for one of them I’ve been filming myself getting ready, from fresh outa the shower to made up in full makeup. My intention for the project (after I’ve edited it all together) is to install it to look like a bathroom mirror itself in the gallery, as a commentary on beauty conventions, makeup rituals and the ways in which women inhabit this way of being.

To work on these projects I’ve been borrowing a Cannon (+ tripod & fancy time lapse programs) from school, and ooohhhhmygod it’s so much fun! I’d set up a floral theme for the ‘mirror’ video to farther emphasize the feminine quality of the project, and it ended up being a super cool effect in so many other ways too. Here are some of photos I’ve taken in between filming, while just playing around. (most are long exposures, fancy!)

‘You’re taking a picture of me right now? Seriously?’

I went into work the other day and these photographs were taped to the wall. My boss lady, Lisa Wicklund, and I taken while cold and exhausted during the Cathedral Village Arts festival by our friend Patrick Lewis. I just love that we have the exact same expression,

‘You’re taking a picture of me right now? Seriously?’

but he must have known what he was doing cause they actually turned out so nicely.

Lately – Sunshine, sluts, sparkles, socks and sales.

-About a month ago, my roomie Colby had a ‘Slutty Denim’ themed twenty first birthday party at our place. The theme was a total hit and everyone got really into their costumes, I may have even made myself heart shaped denim pasties, worn with a jean zip front jumper. Shhhh don’t tell my grandma (or my aunts, uncles and/or any extended family for that matter). It was one of the silliest and best parties I’ve been to in a while; we climbed the door frames, (slutty) dance partied & I covered everyone in blue glitter (of which is still showing up on friends skin all over the city) and climbed up onto our kitchen counters and dance partied there. It was outrageous and incredible and the next day was a hangover for the record books. That morning we also found Abraham wearing Jason’s socks:

So trendy! And, I was so out of it all I could do was watch the shadows from the glasses on our table at brunch. I just think they’re so beautiful, like light crystals. They make me want to do installations of gigantic ‘crystal’ shadows from light reflected through glass.

-Jera drew this portrait of Colby on Colby one afternoon in the park, so cute.

– I live here! Pentax Boy aka Colby and his latest accessory.

– We had our third Vintage Darlings Sale at the Creative City Center at which I bought almost as much as I sold and we found these killer work suits, I had one on too but it was fitted and pink, naturally. There was also a lot of dancing and general dress up, naturally.

To be continued…
